Sometimes we joke that we're bad sales people because we often talk people out of buying things. Frankly, we think the world could do with a lot less stuff. That said, we get excited when we discover products that fill a legitimate need and offer an innovative, eco-friendly, healthy approach. In honour of Canada Day we're celebrating some of our favourite companies who are doing just that.
Lunapads was one of the very first companies we stocked when we opened our doors and we’ve been raving fans ever since. Not only do they make awesome reusable pads, but they also make “Lunapanties” which are underwear with a pad built right in (genius, eh?) If you’re like us, period panties usually consist of ratty old underwear which can add to the general sense of ickiness associated with menstruation. Now we wear comfy, cute underwear that actually make us excited to get our period! Beyond making awesome products, Lunapads does a ton of advocacy work including a partnership with AFRIpads to provide affordable pads to girls in Uganda. They’re also the founders of G Day – a day of celebration and empowerment for girls 10-12 to help mark the transition into adolescence (we’re proud to have been a part of the first G Day TO). We're Lunapads ambassadors so if you pop in the code "AMBFIVE" and the ambassador number "515009" you'll receive 5% off your order.
If you're a smoothie fan, you’ve probably experimented with adding supplements into your morning cocktail... and you’ve probably discovered that most of them are pretty unpalatable. That’s why we were so excited to discover ViraOne – a formula packed with superfoods that actually tastes good! All the ingredients are raw, vegan, gluten-free, sustainable, and non-GMO, and it is free of sugar, soy, dairy, corn, pesticides, additives, or preservatives. Rather than buying a bunch of specialty health foods separately (which can get pricey and complicated) they've combined some of the best ones together, including chaga mushrooms, maca, raw cranberry protein, wildcrafted mesquite, and lots more. We love that Mark and Noreen (the owners) are passionate about making healthy living easy and affordable. When you buy a bag of ViraOne you can feel good knowing you're supporting a truly grassroots company - each batch is handmade by Mark.
We have a real soft spot for family-owned businesses, which is just one of the many reasons we love Hathor. Founded by a mother-daughter duo in BC, Mellta and Nathanda Swift have been making paraben-free, body-friendly products for years (well before it was trendy to do so). We’ve been carrying their lubricants since we opened and they’re consistently our most popular. We tend to stay away from flavoured lubes (they’re usually filled with sugar and chemicals) but we adore the ones made by Hathor, especially the coconut and orange. Their products have always been made with all-natural ingredients, but we’re thrilled that they’ve expanded their line to include SUTIL which is made with certified organic ingredients (and it comes in a biodegradable container). All Hathor products are 20% off until July 6 as part of our Canada Day sale on ecosex.
If you know the sisters, you know we’re not usually ones to wear a lot of makeup. But when we shoot our YouTube videos or appear on TV we’ve found it’s helpful to add a little colour so we stand out on camera. In those instances, we pull out our makeup bag which is filled with eco-friendly goodies from Living Libations. Unlike most mainstream cosmetic companies that perpetuate ideas about needing to “change” how we look, Living Libations is all about enhancing our own unique beauty. We appreciate that many of their products are versatile (for instance, Blushing Balm can be used as a blush and a lipstick) so just a few items will go a long way. Nadine and Ron also offer tons of resources on their website, including a thorough explanation of each ingredient so you know exactly what you’re putting on your body (and why they chose it).
We first discovered Abeego at Grassroots, our favourite local shop for all things eco. Not only do we love that it’s a replacement for Saran Wrap, but it’s also a lighter alternative to all the glass Tupperware we trek to work every day. Between water bottles, food containers, and travel mugs our purse was getting pretty heavy! Abeego is made from beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil. It’s soft and malleable at room temperature so you can wrap it around your favourite sandwich, leftover fruits and veggies, cheeses, cooked meats, etc. When you’re done, just wash it off with some cold water and mild soft and it’s all set to go for your next use. It’s that easy!
We couldn’t have a list of our fave Canadian companies without including Justisse Healthworks for Women – the organization that inspired Red Tent Sisters. We first learned about Justisse when Kim went to a Women’s Studies conference in Edmonton during the last year of her undergrad degree. She knew Amy was struggling to find an alternative to hormonal contraception after experiencing side effects from the pill that disrupted her breastfeeding, so Kim passed on the Justisse manual she’d received from the workshop. And from there, Red Tent Sisters was born. What makes Justisse so unique is that it provides a secular, pro-choice approach to fertility awareness. The founder, Geraldine Matus, has an encyclopedic knowledge of women’s health and an immense passion to help women make informed choices about their reproductive health. We could go on and on about why we love charting but suffice it to say, we both feel like ditching the pill and learning about Justisse has fundamentally changed our relationship to our bodies.
When we had a storefront one of our favourite window displays was a "market" with jars of honey, egg cartons, and toys from Happy Valley with a sign that read “Locally Grown Dildos”. Happy Valley toys are handmade by Susan and Mark in their 100-year-old farmhouse in Peterborough, ON. They are two of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet (case in point – they once brought us fresh local strawberries when they dropped off our order). They’re passionate about high quality, body-safe toys so everything is made from non-porous, easy-to-clean silicone. Unlike most vibrators which need to be replaced when the motor dies, Happy Valley has an innovate design that allows you to replace the removable vibrating section and then the remaining silicone dildo has a lifetime warranty. Eco-friendly, well designed, and made with love, Happy Valley is the definition of good vibes. All Happy Valley Toys are 20% off until July 6 as part of our Canada Day sale on ecosex.
We’re not fans of products that reinforce the idea that the vagina is dirty (it’s a self-cleaning oven, people!) but there are times when a little freshening up can be helpful, as long as it’s done without using chemicals that are going to disrupt your pH. That’s why we love the 2Lip – it just uses water! Created by three Canadian female entrepreneurs, 2Lip is a reusable “on the go bidet” made of FDA grade silicone that can be used to alleviate a variety of conditions, including hemorrhoids, yeast infections, and UTI’s. It’s reusable - you just wash it with warm water and soap – which makes it an eco-friendly alternative to disposable wipes.
We discovered Sartoria's upcycled clothing at the One of a Kind Show a few years ago and now we visit their booth every Christmas to pick up gifts for friends (and ourselves!) Beyond being ridiculously cute - you should see Amy in her pink cashmere tank with tiny hearts used to patch up holes - they’re also super comfy and warm. You haven’t experienced luxury until you’ve pulled on a pair of wool undies in the middle of the winter! We love that all the clothing is handmade and upcycled so you’re helping extend the life of an item that might otherwise have been discarded, while also supporting an artist.
Along with ditching the pill and learning about the Justisse Method, switching to the Diva Cup is up there on the list of things that have radically changed how we relate to our bodies. The Diva Cup is a reusable menstrual cup that offers an eco-friendly, body-friendly alternative to tampons or pads (created by another mother-daughter team, Francine & Carinne Chambers). The reason the Diva Cup is so life changing is that it allows you to connect with your cycle in a totally new way by encouraging you to actually see what is happening with your cycle. We’re pleased that menstrual cups are becoming more mainstream these days – they're easier to find in stores and there are lots of different styles available. That said, the Diva Cup remains the only one approved for sale in Canada by Health Canada. The Diva Cup is 20% off until July 6 as part of our Canada Day sale on ecosex.

Kim & Amy Sedgwick love to discuss sex, periods, and all the other things we’re not supposed to talk about. The co-founders of Red Tent Sisters and ecosex.ca, they’ve been featured in every major Canadian news outlet and have become a trusted resource for women seeking natural (effective!) birth control, a more joyful sex life, and an empowered journey to motherhood.
