On an average day you're not likely to find us sisters wearing make-up. We wish we could say it is a conscious feminist decision (we do care about promoting greater body acceptance and more realistic portrayals of beauty) but the truth is that it's just not one of our top priorities in the morning. We work for ourselves, which means for the most part the only person looking at us is each other! And we have the good fortune of never having struggled with major skin issues. So, in the long list of morning priorities, make-up just happened to drop off the list.
That said, there are still times when we want to wear make-up. Either because we need to "pop" on screen (such as when we film our YouTube videos) or because we want to experience the ritual of adornment associated with preparing for a big event like a wedding. On those occasions we reach for our cosmetic bags and when we do, we want everything inside to be as toxin-free as possible.
For those who wear make-up every day, ensuring your cosmetics are body-safe and eco-friendly is even more important, since toxins like parabens have a cumulative effect. We recommend checking out the ratings of your favourite products using the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. But in case you're curious what our top picks are, here's a peak inside our cosmetic bags.
Cover-Up & Foundation
We use RMS Beauty's "Un" Cover-Up. It has one of the lowest toxicity ratings (1/10 ) from the Cosmetics Database and it contains several high quality oils that are healing to the skin. We get it from the Detox Market on King West in Toronto but it can also be purchased online. We also use mineral-based powders from Pure and Simple, which can be purchased online or in-store at one of their four Toronto locations.
For mascara we use Fruit-Pigmented Mascara by 100% Pure which was recommended as the top pick from the Detox Market. It's also got great reviews on Amazon (4.3 with over 450 reviews!) In terms of ingredients, it has a rating of 2/10 from the Cosmetics Database. It is worth noting that because it's fresh it doesn't last as long as mainstream brands so if you're like us and don't wear mascara a lot that may be an issue.
Lipstick & Lip Tint
For day-to-day use, we love the subtle colour and moisturizing effect of Living Libations' MaidenFern Blushing Balm which can also double as a cheek cream. We alternate between that and Marie Natie lipgloss which we picked up from Grassroots. For more formal occasions we use Lip Conditioner by Ilia. Also available through the Detox Market.
For applying make-up we use EcoTools brushes, which we purchased from The Big Carrot. However, you can also purchase them online or find a local retailer using the EcoTools website. Their brushes are made from sustainable bamboo and feature recycled aluminum. To help reduce waste the company favours reusable packaging (like this super cute little pouch!)
